WHAT KEY DO YOU PLAY THIS IN ?
Most standard tunes tend to always be played in a certain key. For example, everybody will play "Blue Bossa" in Cm, "Out Of Nowhere" in G, or "Body & Soul" in Db.
However, there are a few tunes that different players will play in different keys. That is because people learn tunes either from different Real Books or different recordings.
Here are some of those tunes that come to mind:
It Could Happen To You:
Eb or F
The Way You Look Tonight:
F or Eb
Autumn Leaves:
Gm or Em
On Green Dolphin St.:
C or Eb
Like Someone (In Love):
C or Eb
But Not For Me:
Eb or F
Summertime:
Am or Dm
Blues:
F or Bb (or Eb, or C, or Ab...)
Night and Day:
C or Eb
It would be a good idea to learn those tunes in both commonly played keys, so that we don't embarrass ourselves at jam sessions...
Note that we are generally talking about learning those few songs in just 2 keys. Doing so will actually help us understand the chord changes better, and eventually can encourage us to experiment with even more keys.
Can you think of any other standards that are typically played in at least 2 keys? Let me know, and I can add them to the list.
